Thanks to an iced coffee Matt brought me, a mug of hot chocolate from the Gate, and a refreshingly temperately temperatured morning spent in my hammock reading, I'm ready to take on anything! Hopefully you are too, cause not only is next week going to be jam-packed with Secret Invasion, Action Comics, X-Men goodness, this is also going to be the most packed First Look ever! Bonus features, folks, bonus features.
Firstly, I have to bid a fond "see you soon" to the First Look's most knowingly loyal reader and my best friend, Raph, who will be moving to New York City next Thursday to attend law school! You know how separated lovers gaze up to the sky at night and wonder if their better half is looking up at those same stars? I take comfort in knowing that every Friday morning, Raph and I will be communing through the same blog.
Secondly, though she will probably never read it on here, I offer my congratulations to my good friend Mary and her soon-to-be-husband Matt, who will be married tomorrow afternoon! All of my best to the both of you! And go easy on Matt and Jermaine tomorrow as I will be down in Charlotte for the wedding!
Stephen's So-Called Emo Life!
- Starship Troopers 3 - someone brought us a screener copy at the store. I've made two attempts to watch it since last Friday. Though I'm a big fan of the first movie and made it through the second, I haven't gotten more than 5 minutes into this one. Terrible. Maybe the worst movie I've ever seen.
- Northern Exposure - got the first season on sale at Target last week and the third season on sale at Best Buy last night. I won't say it's the best show I've ever watched, but I can see how it was pushing the envelope in the early 90s and it passes the time. And the guest star in the last episode of season one
looks just like a mix of Jermaine and Devin. - Local - 12 issue series from Oni Press, written by Brian Wood and drawn by Ryan Kelly. It's the first series that Blair Butler's Fresh Ink has really turned me on to. The basic idea is that a girl leaves home at 18, and over the course of 12 years, she lives in at least 10 different cities. Each time she moves she re-invents herself and as a result of her choices learns something new about life. This is conveyed perfectly through the shifting tones in each chapter. I know we don't have every issue in the store anymore, but we should have an oversized hardcover of the whole series coming pretty soon.
- NY Deli and Pastry - on Battleground across from Brassfield in the shopping center with Big Lots. Pretty good sandwiches, great cheesecake and pastries. I think the price would have been a lot
more manageable if I hadn't gotten soda, upgraded to sweet potato fries for my side, and taken a cannoli home. - Spaced - the BBC series from Simon Pegg, Edgar Wright, Jessica Hynes, and Nick Frost (Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz). $40 might seem like a lot for 14 episodes, but it's better than $80 or $90 for 13 episodes of Doctor Who, and each episode has an original commentary track by the cast and a guest track by Quentin Tarantino, Kevin Smith, Patton Oswalt, Matt Stone (South Park), or Diablo Cody (Juno), as well as a full length doc, music videos, and cast, crew, and character bios.
